Ruby Byler Jochen, age 99, passed away February 22, 2019, in La Grange, Texas. She was born October 11, 1919, in Muldoon, Texas, to Jessie and Nettie Byler.
Ruby spent her childhood in Muldoon with her parents, five sisters, and two brothers. She worked at the textile factory in Brenham for a few years before moving to La Grange in 1943 to work at Arldt’s Cafe. She married Elton Jochen on September 12, 1949, at Swiss Alp Lutheran Church. For more than two decades, she worked at Lukas Bakery in La Grange.
Ruby loved baking and gardening. Gardening was her true passion, especially tending to her vegetables out at their farm. Ruby was a very sociable person. There was nothing she enjoyed more than visiting with family and friends. Even after she was homebound, she kept up with what was going on around La Grange and maintained her large social circle.
Ruby is survived by her husband Elton, her sister Muriel Lueders, and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Earnest Byler and William Byler, sisters Jessie Rose, Ruth Giese, Lucille Riehs, and Louise Hunger, and dear friends, Eroy and Ora Lee Roscher.
Visitation will be Monday, February 25, noon–7 p.m., at Fayette Memorial Funeral Home. Family will be present at the visitation from 5 to 7 p.m. The funeral service will be Tuesday, February 26, 10 a.m., at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, followed by burial at La Grange City Cemetery.
Pallbearers are John D. Riehs, Rod McGrew, Greg Hunger, Troy Byler, Kenneth Schulz, and Glen Roscher.
The family suggests memorial donation be made to Hospice Brazos Valley; 1048 N. Jefferson; La Grange TX 78945, Saint Paul Lutheran Church; 110 W. Walnut, La Grange TX 78945 or the charity of one’s choice.
