John Wilfred Poncik, 81, passed away on December 14, 2010, at his home in Rabbs Prairie after a battle with cancer. He was born on September 2, 1929, in La Grange, Texas the son of Emil and Alma Lehzen Poncik.
John served his country in the U.S. Army stationed at Ft Bliss, El Paso Texas, March 1951 through March 1953 where he served as a mechanic. He was a life-long farmer, raising corn, milo and cotton over the years, and enjoyed the farm life, fishing on the river and his family.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Gladys Vanicek Poncik; their children; daughter Joyce Wood and husband Daniel of La Grange, daughter Katherine Walla and husband David of Plum, son David Poncik of La Grange and daughter Carolyn Rost and husband Jeff of La Grange. He is also survived by three grandsons, Brian Wood and fiancé Amanda Witt of La Grange, Jonathan Walla and wife Melissa of Plum, and Jordan Walla of Plum. He is also survived by brothers Emil Poncik of Sugarland and Joe Poncik and wife Linda of La Grange; sister-in-law, Dorothy Poncik of Columbus. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Emil and Alma Poncik and brothers, Charlie and Glenn Poncik.
Visitation is scheduled for Thursday December 16, 2010 from 8:00 AM until 8:00 PM at the Fayette Memorial Funeral Home in La Grange. The family will receive visitors from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM. Rosary will be recited at 7:00 PM at Fayette Memorial Funeral Home Chapel.
Funeral Mass will be held on Friday December 17, 2010 at 10:00 AM at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in La Grange.
Internment will follow at La Grange City Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Hospice Brazos Valley La Grange, 1048 N. Jefferson, La Grange.
