John Wayne Longwell, 66, of La Grange died Wednesday, March 23, 2011, at SMMC.

John was born in Linn County, Missouri, the son of Jesse A Longwell and J. Margaret (Deskins) Longwell, on March 18, 1945.

He served in the US Air Force during the Vietnam War, spending 5 TDY tours in the Philippines and traveling all over the world. He spent 4 yrs in the USAF and discharged as a Sergeant. He came to La Grange in 1977 with Brown & Root from Austin to work in the building of Units 1 & 2 for FPP and stayed on with LCRA in La Grange to retire after 22 yrs of service in 1999. He then spent approx. 7 years tending to his own RV repair service.

John really enjoyed helping people. A member of GWRRA (motorcycle assoc.) for many years, he traveled as well as helped with multiple charities using the motorcycles to get attention. Also a member of Second Baptist Church of La Grange since 1986, he most recently helped with the church’s Disaster Relief group and the Texas Baptist men, with such efforts as food clean up after hurricane Katrina and meal prep for flood victims in Mexico.

Survivors include his wife, Connie Longwell, mother J. Margaret Longwell, son Todd Longwell, daughter Debra McComb, and grandchildren Hannah Horton and Micah McComb, along with many cousins and their families.

He was preceded in death by his father in 1966 and baby daughter, Julie in 1974

Visitation is scheduled for Friday March 25, 2011, from 8:00 AM until 8:00 PM at Fayette Memorial Funeral Home in La Grange. The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM

Funeral services are scheduled for Saturday March 26, 2011, at 11:00 AM at Second Baptist Church in La Grange. Cremation will follow.

Memorials may be made to Second Baptist Church Disaster Fund, Relay for Life, Fayette County Animal Shelter, Brazos Valley Hospice or charity of your choice.
