Gary Schultz

d. September 6, 2013

Gary W. Schultz of Pleasanton, TX passed from this life on September 6, 2013 at the age of 65. Gary was born March 12, 1948 to Earl D. and Loma Herdler Schultz in La Grange, Texas. Gary is survived by his wife, Susan Schaefer Schultz of Pleasanton, brother-in-law, Jim F. Schaefer and wife Mildred Schaefer of Spicewood, TX, three nephews: Kevin F. Schaefer and wife Erin Schaefer of Alpine, CA, Rustan Schaefer and wife Keeley Schaefer of Austin, Keith Schaefer and wife Cam Schaefer of Austin, and one niece: Melissa Schaefer of Austin. Six great nephews and nieces: Jack Schaefer, Mitchell Schaefer, Kylie Schaefer, Allyson Schaefer, Chase Schaefer and Evelynne Schaefer, along with numerous aunts, uncles and beloved friends also survive Gary. A brother Roger Schultz of Houston, parents, and both sets of grandparents preceded Gary in death.

Gary was a graduate of Texas Lutheran University where he earned his BBA in Accounting. It was during his high school years that Gary met the love of his life, Susan. Gary and Susan married on December 19, 1970 in Gonzales, Texas, where he worked as an Accountant at Konklin and Newton. Gary and Susan resided in Gonzales for three years before relocating to Pleasanton, TX in December of 1973, where Gary would work as a Certified Public Accountant for Harris, Havins, and Company until becoming an independent practitioner in the fall of 1987.

As a CPA, Gary was well respected for his meticulous work ethic - working till he found every last penny. An avid problem solver, Gary met challenges with patience and perseverance, working with his head, his hands, and his heart. His and Susan’s latest challenge, and labor of love, was renovating Gary’s childhood home in La Grange.

Remembered by his friends and loved ones for always putting the needs of others before his own, Gary exemplified the motto of Susan’s father: If you don’t have time to do the task correctly the first time, when will you have time?

When time permitted, Gary and Susan enjoyed spending quality time traveling to various campgrounds, National Parks and Monuments across the northwest. On their trips Gary and Susan enjoyed rekindling old friendships while sparking new ones. Gary and Susan also enjoyed attending plays. A particular favorite was the Annual Utah Shakespearean Festival in Cedar City, Utah. However, when time for distant travel did not permit, Gary and Susan regularly relished “backyard” time with close friends and loved ones.

A private burial will precede a scheduled service beginning at 11:00 AM on October 3, 2013 at Fayette Memorial Funeral Home in La Grange, TX, with Fernando Mesa officiating. Pallbearers are: Ernst (Juno) Druebert, Pat Druebert, Mark Jones, ID Schultz, Pete Pawelek, Don Treybig. Honorary pallbearers are: Kevin Schaefer, Rustan Schaefer, Keith Schaefer, Thomas Marburger, Lanny Mitchon, Brandon Below, Wilburn Hackebeil, Light Liebscher, Craig Dowdy, Jimmy Megel, Richard Shelton.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests that donations be made to: Hill Country Youth Ranch, Gardenia Janssen Animal Shelter, St. John’s Lutheran Church, or Luther Hill.
